"What is the difference between a Numismatic Society and a Coin Club?"
Good question.
"Well, a numismatic society is a sort of club for people who are interested in coins, isn't it?"
Absolutely right. And that is exactly what the OWL is all about.

Our Members are interested in almost everything to do with coins, tokens, medallions and money in general. We range from beginners to former beginners, we span the years from Ancient to Modern, we don't believe that there is any "proper" way to collect, and we do believe that our hobby should be enjoyable.

And because we enjoy our hobby, we turn out in all weathers to meet, once a month, to talk about our collections, our recent bargains (or not!) and to listen to presentations from people who have something interesting to say.

We hope that you might feel the same way too. If you do, please look around our site. There is information about our Club, our Meetings, how to find us, Numismatic Notes, and some longer Papers which our Members have put together. And if what you see interests you, why not come along to our next meeting? Visitors are always welcome, and sometimes turn into new Members!

  • Coins of Lancashire contains new or updated papers on the Halsall Penny, the first token of the industrial revolution, and Daniel Eccleston's (and Matthew Boulton's!) Lancashire Halfpenny of 1794
  • Ancient Britain features items about the first six hundred years or so of coinage in the British Isles. Papers by Peter Thompson on the Coinage of Roman Britain, and Alan Dawson on the possibilities of Dark Ages Coinage, appear here.
  • Numismatic Notes feature numismatic nuggets which don't extend to a full Paper. Recent additions include (1) a note about enigmatic marks on the pennies of King Cnut, with a request for more information, (2) the discovery of a seemingly unlisted overdate on a 1674 fourpence of King Charles II, (3) a suggestion as to which of the 1787 Wilkinson Tokens was the Iron Master's very first, (4) a view of Small Change? as understood by the ancient Greeks and (5) a review of date varieties on the 1787 sixpences.
  • Oh Yes? offers items of a less serious kind. A piece on the subject of Decimall Arithmeticke reviews the 300 year fight against decimal coinage in Great Britain, and there is news of a previously unknown type of classical tetradrachm.
  • NumSoc Forum is your opportunity to respond to any of the points made in the notes and papers on our website.  We can all learn from discussion and feedback about subjects of mutual interest.
