OWLNS Secretary Alan Dawson interviewed on Southport Community Radio

As almost every Society is well aware, one of the biggest problems is getting coverage in local media. Southport Community Radio aims to provide radio coverage of local events to local people, and as part of the licensing process has been on-air for several experimental periods each of a month. The latest of these has run from the end of September to the end of October 2007. And to meet its objectives, SCR has been featuring the activities of a number of local Clubs and Societies.

Monday 15th October was the turn of OWLNS, and our Secretary Alan Dawson took advantage of an invitation to appear on the Mike Swift Programme. Mike swiftly (oh, dear!) put his guest at ease, and asked a number of questions which hopefully proved interesting to the audience, among other things relating to the origins of the Halsall Penny and the meaning (and value!) of Countermarked Dollars. Listeners were referred to the Society website for more information, so, if that is how you have arrived here, welcome!

Inter-Counties Numismatic Quiz

Each year,  the Numismatic Societies and Coin Clubs of the North West organise the Inter-Counties Numismatic Quiz for the honour of Numismatics, and the temporary possession of an impressive trophy!

The OWL team has an impressive track record in previous contests, being Champions in 2004 and 2005, but sadly fell at the final hurdle in the 2006 event by a lamentable failure to remember all the states issuing Euro currency - it is, after all, very easy to overlook the issues from San Marino and Monaco, though the Vatican City stuck in the collective mind!

The 2007 Quiz was hosted on 12th June 2007 by the members of the Crewe and District Coin and Medal Society, the 2006 winners. The questions were set by the members of the South Manchester Numismatic Society.

And the winners, the 2007 Champions?

Oh, yes. THE OWL TEAM! For the third time in four years the combined experience of our Resident Roman David Regan (left) and our Secretary Alan Dawson (right) triumphed.
