David Coins It!

Autism Initiative Benefits From Holiday Change & Scrap

Local coin expert David M Regan is celebrating raising over £1,000 to help people with autism through the collection of scrap coins and old holiday currency. David, who has dealt in coins, medals, precious metals and historical artefacts from his premises on Hoghton St, Southport since 1983, has been supporting Autism Initiatives since 2013.

“I go into Great Little Place café regularly and they have a slogan ‘Great Coffee, for a Great Reason’ so I asked what the reason was.  When I heard about the charity behind the café and the great work they do supporting people with autism I offered to help.”

David, who is Chairman of the Ormskirk and West Lancashire Numismatic Society, raises funds through scrapping old copper coins, discontinued currency and old holiday change that customers and members of the general public bring into his shop. “When someone brings me old coins to appraise I let them know what is valuable and share my expertise. Where there are coins of no value, like old pennies and old holiday change, I give people the option to take these home or donate them to charity. I wait until I have more than 50 kilos of coins and then take them to scrap dealers donating all the proceeds to charity.”

Sue Yarnell, Manager of Great Little Place cafes said:  “We are delighted that David has chosen to support our work. Every penny raised helps local people with autism and their families and we simply couldn’t do this without people like David and his customers making donations.”

If you have any discontinued currency or old holiday change that you would like to donate to a great cause, please drop this in to David M Regan, 25 Hoghton Street, Southport, PR9 0NS (through Carswell’s Estate Agents). David’s office is open 10am – 4.30pm daily except Tuesday and Thursdays.
